I hope everyone had a great break and you are refreshed and ready to work hard this quarter! We have a lot happening and I need everyone to put forth their best effort on everything we do.
We are starting several new units this quarter. We are beginning to read The City of Ember. Please make sure you are keeping up on your reading and bring your book to school daily! We are also starting a poetry unit! This will last throughout the month of January. We will be concluding the unit by creating hardback books and having a class poetry night on Wednesday, January 25, 2012. Mark your calendars now!
We are also starting our science fair projects. Tomorrow your student will be coming home with the thick packet of information. Do not get overwhelmed by this project. We will be working to complete each component together step by step. There will be a timeline of due dates in the packet. This project will require both work at home as well as in class. Make sure to review the packet with your family. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! This project is a large part of your science grade for the quarter.
Attending school on a daily basis and arriving on time is very important. We are in the school wide program that will reward our class with a popcorn party when we have everyone here and on time for ten days! We need to get our attendance rate higher.
This quarter we are beginning to be stricter with enforcing the rules. Make sure your student is turning their work on time, following directions, and putting forth their best effort at all times! Also, encourage your student to correct missed answers. This will give them the opportunity to learn what they did not understand the first time and get more points while doing so.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

Tuesday- Science fair packets go home

Wednesday- $1 dress down day

1/16- NO SCHOOL

1/20- SPIN Night
-	Class Spelling Bee

1/24- Skate Night

1/25- POETRY NIGHT @6pm!!!

1/27- Daddy/Daughter Event

**Check your student’s science fair packet for the timeline of due dates for the project.

Mark your calendars now for Mr. Emory’s Class Poetry Night!!!!!

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 @6pm!!

*Snacks and beverages will be provided!

Spelling List #10 and Vocabulary Words

We are back in school which means we are back in our normal routine!!!
Here are this week's spelling and vocabulary words!!!

Spelling

1. stalk
2. off
3. because
4. brought
5. called
6. drawn
7. awful
8. awkward
9. lawyer
10. daughter
11. fault
12. author
13. always
14. already
15. although
16. belong
17. office
18.haul
19. city
20. Please look over them and sign them. Make sure to see what assignments your student is missing and help make sure they turn them in. We have had a more difficult time this quarter turning in our work in a timely manner.
Tomorrow is Election Day! Make sure to ask your student about what they are learning. Today we learned about the registration process and the personal lives of the mayoral candidates. Tomorrow we will learn about their visions for Tucson along with the election process. It is going to be a fun filled learning experience so make sure your student is here! Also, tomorrow state reports and floats are due! We will also begin presentations of our states so make sure your student is ready!
The Thanksgiving Feast is Tuesday, November 22, 2011. Our class is in charge of bring in COOKED turkeys on this day. Please let me know if you are able to donate a cooked turkey.
This week we are not having vocabulary words because there is not any school Friday. However, there are spelling words and the test will be on Thursday. Spelling packets will also be due on Thursday.
Attending school on a daily basis and arriving on time is very important. We are in the school wide program that will reward our class with a popcorn party when we have everyone here and on time for ten days! Unfortunately we have only gotten ATTEN. That means we have only had everyone at school on time for 5 days out of the first 16 days of the quarter. We need to get our attendance rate higher.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

Tuesday-ELECTION DAY!!!
-	Final State Reports Due
-	Final State Floats Due
-	State Presentations
-	Papa John’s Fundraiser

Wednesday- State Presentations

Thursday- Spelling Test

Friday- Veteran’s Day- NO SCHOOL

11/14- Progress Reports go home

11/22- Thanksgiving Feast
-	Skate Night

11/23-11/25- NO SCHOOL

WE NEED COOKED TURKEYS!!!

Please send a note with your student if you are able to donate a cooked turkey for our Thanksgiving Feast!

CONGRATULATIONS TO
GABBI AND ALAN!
OUR OCTOBER
STUDENTS OF THE MONTH!!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mremorylpa.blogspot.com/2011/11/extra-extra-read-all-about-it.html' title='Extra! I am proud to say that we had 100 percent of our parents show up for a conference!!!! Thank you for being a part of your student's education!

Also, thank you those of you who volunteered to work our class booth at the Harvest Festival. I really appreciate it. We still need five more volunteers. If you are available to help, please let me know by sending a note with your student or emailing me. The Harvest Festival is this Friday, October 28th from 6-8pm.

There will not be any spelling or vocabulary words this week. Instead, students will be required to complete additional homework assignments that have to deal with the states and capitals. This Friday, October 28th, we will be taking our final test on ALL 50 states and capitals! Make sure to encourage your students to study!! Quizzing them will help prepare them for the test.

Our school is currently taking tax credit donations! Money that is raised goes right back to our classroom. Please see the front desk to ask any questions you may have and DONATE TODAY!!

As always, if you have any questions/concerns about anything, do not hesitate to contact me.

Have a great week!

Mr. Emory :)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mremorylpa.blogspot.com/2011/10/extra-extra-read-all-about-it_24.html' title='Extra! I am very happy with how well first quarter went and look forward to an even better second quarter! Along with the start of a new quarter, comes some changes. We will be stricter with our expectations in class as well as how we turn in work on time. Remember to turn in all work when it is due to avoid attending afterschool detention. Thank you ALL for signing up for a parent/teacher conference. I am very proud to say that we had every parent sign up! That could not be done without your dedication to your student’s education. Please remember to attend your conference this week and arrive on time! If you do not remember your appointment time, please let me know.
This quarter we will begin keeping a reading log. Students will be responsible for keeping track of how many minutes they are reading. Along with getting our planners signed daily, students will also need an adult to sign their reading log each night. Make sure the reading logs are kept in a safe place. They will be collected at the end of each month.
Attending school on a daily basis and arriving on time is very important. We are starting a new school wide program that will reward our class with a popcorn party when we have everyone here and on time for ten days! Let’s show off to the other classes that we have the best attendance!

CONGRATULATIONS TO KEVIN AND DENISE! With that being said, progress reports are going home with your student today and need to be signed. A list of missing assignments will be included on the progress report. If you have any questions regarding your student’s grades, please let me know. We are also starting our first big project of the school year. Today, your student is bringing home a packet with all of the requirements and due dates for the project. Please make sure to read through it with your child and work with them to make sure they are completing each component on time! This project will count towards your student’s social studies and writing grades.

We are beginning a social studies unit on the United States. Along with the state report and float that your student is required to complete, we will be memorizing the capitals of each state, their spelling, and where they are on the map. Each week we will be focusing on a different region of the United States. The spelling words will be the states we will be working on for that particular week.

On our class website you will find a link to several webpages that will help your student learn everything they need to about the United States! There is a state location game, as well as a video of the song we will be working on throughout the unit to memorize the states and capitals. Ask your student to sing you the song!! It has a catchy tune:)

Mr. Emory
mr.emory5@gmail.com
721-4205

CONSTITUTION DAY!!!!!

Constitution Day is this Friday, September 16, 2011. This is a great group of 5th graders we have in our room Thank you so much for all the supplies you provided for your student. We really appreciate it. If you have not yet purchased the book City of Ember, please do so as soon as possible. We will begin reading the book as soon as everyone has a copy. If you have any questions or need clarification on anything do not hesitate to contact me at any time.

We are now in our regular daily routine. Please ask your student to go over what the day is like and what homework they will be having. If your student has not yet purchased a school planner, they MUST have one by Wednesday. They are available at the front desk for $2. Homework and important dates will be written in the planners daily.

Homework: Each night your student will have a spelling page to complete in their spelling packet, a math lesson, and 20 minutes of reading. You reading to your student or them reading to you can count towards the 20 minutes. Please sign the planner every day stating that your student has completed all of their homework.

Tests: Each week your student will bring home a spelling list and vocabulary list. We will be defining the vocabulary words in class. Students are expected to take home both lists and study at home every night! We will be taking spelling and vocabulary tests every Friday.

Students have the opportunity to do homework and test corrections on all math assignments. After the assignment is graded, on a separate sheet of paper students must show all work for questions that they are correcting. Students will receive half a point for each corrected answer.

We love to celebrate birthdays in our classroom! Treats are welcomed as long as they are store bought and do not contain nuts. Please let me know at least a day in advance so I can plan accordingly.

NUT FREE CLASSROOM!!! (Except for our class guinea pig named Peanut)

Our classroom is a Nut Free Zone which means we are not able to have any type of nuts in the classroom. This is because a couple of our classmates have a nut allergy. Thank you for your cooperation.

Mark Your Calendar:

Tuesday- PBIS Assembly

Friday- Spelling Test
- Vocabulary Test

22nd- Entertainment Book Sale Begins

25th- Picture Day (dress in uniform!)

26th- Back to School Dance

Aug. 29th- Sept. 2nd- Book Fair

30th- Skate Night

31st- OPEN HOUSE!!!

If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact me.

Mr. Emory
mr.emory5@gmail.com
721-4205

Spelling/Vocabulary Week #1

Here are the spelling and vocabulary words for the week!
